Soccer-Maradona’s children call for moving body to mausoleum for safety and tribute

Soccer-Maradona’s children call for moving body to mausoleum for safety and tribute

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Diego Maradona’s children filed a request with the Argentine Courts on Thursday to move the former football great’s body “to a much safer place” and for fans “to pay tribute” in a mausoleum.

Maradona’s remains lie in a private cemetery on the outskirts of Buenos Aires where he was carried in November 2020 in a massive funeral procession. Only family members are allowed to enter the cemetery.

The mausoleum, called “Memorial del Diez,” is located behind the Casa Rosada, the seat of the executive branch of the Argentine government, and will be open to the public, Veronica Ojeda, mother of Maradona’s youngest son, told local media.

“All the heirs request by common agreement to authorise the transfer to his next destination of eternal rest (…) in a much safer place than the current one,” said the note presented to the court signed by Dalma and Gianinna Maradona, and Ojeda on behalf of Diego Maradona Jr.

“And so that all the Argentine people and the citizens of the world can pay homage to our father who was the greatest Argentine idol.”

The relocation will take place around Oct. 30, the birth date of the 1986 World Cup winner with Argentina, one of the family’s lawyers told reporters.

Maradona died at age 60 in November 2020 from a heart attack. Fans of Napoli and of the Argentine national team worshipped him as the “god of football.”

Soccer-Leverkusen players easily motivated but cautious, says Alonso

Soccer-Leverkusen players easily motivated but cautious, says Alonso

ROME (Reuters) – Bayern Leverkusen players were easily motivated to give their best as they grabbed a 2-0 win at AS Roma in the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday but remain cautious ahead of the return leg, coach Xabi Alonso said.

Goals by Florian Wirtz and Robert Andrich gave the newly-crowned Bundesliga champions a two-goal advantage over last season’s runners-up Roma, extending their unbeaten run to 47 matches in all competitions.

“We made good transitions once they were open and we had enough spaces, the commitment and the discipline from the players have been fantastic,” Alonso said. “But there is still a game to play.

“We have used that system before, especially because we have players who can play in different roles … Today the game plan was quite clear, and we really performed at a very high level.

“We could have scored more. But to be fair, they could have scored as well. The result could have been a little bit different, but it’s fair enough. It was not difficult to motivate the players.”

Leverkusen won their first meeting with Roma in almost 20 years, since they beat Italy’s capital side 3-1 at home in October 2004 in the Champions League group stage. They were winless in five games against Roma since.

“It was a serious and careful match, we were smart and mature. They had their chances, the lead gave us more confidence to do our things in possession and non-possession,” Alonso added.

“Up front, we have fast players. In the second half, we did not concede anything – we knew if we were careful and solid, we would then have our chances. The team found the right compromise.

“2-0 is a good result, we go home happy but cautious. What we are doing in this season is outstanding. We have quality players with a very high level of focus, the most difficult thing is to be consistent.

“We don’t want to stop – we want to go on like this until the end of the season.”

Leverkusen scored yet another last-gasp equaliser to get a 2-2 draw against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday that allowed them to maintain their record unbeaten run intact.

Soccer-Chelsea’s Gallagher makes his mark again despite uncertain future

Soccer-Chelsea’s Gallagher makes his mark again despite uncertain future

LONDON (Reuters) – Just before kick-off in Chelsea’s London derby against Tottenham Hotspur, the home fans unfurled a giant banner that stretched over both tiers of the Shed End of Stamford Bridge depicting Conor Gallagher and the message: “Chelsea since birth”.

Twenty four minutes into Thursday’s Premier League game, the England midfielder repaid the supporters for their tribute, floating a free-kick for Trevoh Chalobah to head home and set Chelsea on their way to a 2-0 win over their fierce city rivals.

The banner, Gallagher’s latest goal involvement and his typical high-energy, tough-tackling performance seemed to send a message to Chelsea’s owners that they should think twice if they really are considering selling him.

The U.S. owners of the club are reportedly interested in capitalising on the “pure profit” value of Gallagher who, as a product of the club’s youth programme, would help to shore up Chelsea’s finances.

The club have spent around 1.0 billion pounds ($1.25 billion) on players since the private equity-led takeover of the west London club two years ago, when Britain’s government forced Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich into a sale.

Now, with a second season about to end trophy-less despite that huge outlay, with the only targets left being qualification for the Europa League or the even less glamorous Europa Conference League, Chelsea need to make their sums add up.

Gallagher has been on Chelsea’s books since he was eight but the 24-year-old’s contract is due to expire at the end of next season, adding to the speculation that the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge might sell him this summer, just as fellow academy graduate Mason Mount was sold to Manchester United last year.

If the decision lay with the fans, Gallagher would be going absolutely nowhere.

As well as his assist against Spurs on Thursday, Gallagher scored the equaliser in a 2-2 draw away at Aston Villa on Saturday, adding to his case for a starting place in Gareth Southgate’s England team in the Euros in Germany this summer.

“You can see in my starting 11, I think the whole season he was always there,” Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino told reporters when asked about the importance of Gallagher to the team, adding he and other home-grown players “have the capacity in this type of game to give a little bit more.”

Asked about the speculation surrounding Gallagher’s future, he said he was not involved: “This is a situation that they need to fix between the club and the player.”

Soccer-Chelsea dent Tottenham’s Champions League hopes with 2-0 win

Soccer-Chelsea dent Tottenham’s Champions League hopes with 2-0 win

LONDON (Reuters) -Pinpoint headed goals from Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson earned Chelsea a 2-0 victory over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Thursday, dealing a blow to Spurs’ hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Former academy defender Chalobah diverted the ball expertly into the top corner from a Conor Gallagher free kick 35 metres out in the 24th minute.

It gave Chelsea a deserved lead after sustained pressure from the home side with chances for Mykhailo Mudryk, Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke. Spurs defender Micky van de Ven kept his side in the match, with last-ditch tackles in the area and a clearance off the line.

Tottenham’s Australian coach Ange Postecoglou looked furious in the dugout throughout the first 45 minutes and his side came out of the second half with greater verve and determination.

But efforts by Son Heung-min and Pedro Porro were blocked and saved.

Senegal’s Jackson calmed home nerves against the run of play in the 72nd minute when he was on hand to head home after a free kick from Chelsea top scorer Cole Palmer hit the bar and bounced down.

The three points, taking them to eighth, were vital for the push by Chelsea, under former Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino, towards a Europa League place after a disappointing season but left Tottenham seven points adrift of the top four.

“We are in a good place,” Pochettino told the BBC. “We have amazing professionals working on set-pieces. The team really showed in the way we wanted to build this way to play.”

He described the first half as fantastic. “Then you have to contain and suffer.”

Postecoglou took responsibility for the defeat.

“I feel like we’ve lost a bit of belief and conviction in our football and that is on me to change that,” he told Sky Sports. “We were nowhere near good enough. That is on me.”

Tottenham have a poor record against their southwest London rivals. They lost the home fixture last November 4-1 and have won only one of their last 10 meetings.

Athlete of the Week: Marian girls soccer’s Anna Bragg

Athlete of the Week: Marian girls soccer’s Anna Bragg

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Anna Bragg knows how to put on a show.

“Any game you come to, you’re going to get something really exciting,” said Marian girls soccer head coach Teresa DeGeorge.

The senior forward leads the Crusaders with 22 goals on the year along with nine assists—which ties a team-high.

“She has great talent—the sky is the limit for her,” DeGeorge added. “It’s so exciting when I can say a player hasn’t reached their peak. Anna hasn’t reached her peak yet. She has big time drive.”

That was on display in Marian’s 3-0 win over Papillion-La Vista in the district championship. Bragg scored two goals in the victory.

“I just give all the credit to my teammates,” she said. “They always set me up for success. I couldn’t have done anything without them.”

Anna will continue her soccer career at Creighton, becoming the latest Bragg to join the Jays. Her brother, Brady, is a freshman on the Creighton men’s soccer team.

“The concept of family around that and being close to home, it just felt so special to me and felt so right,” she said. “I love everything about Creighton and the coaching staff as well.”

Before her college journey begins, she is focused on bringing home a state title to Marian.

“This team has so much grit and we play the game for each other and love each other,” Bragg said. “I think we have what it takes. We just have to stay humble.”

Soccer-Newcastle’s Tonali gets suspended two-month ban by FA for betting breaches

Soccer-Newcastle’s Tonali gets suspended two-month ban by FA for betting breaches

(Reuters) -Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been handed a suspended two-month ban after admitting breaches of English FA betting rules, the Premier League club said on Thursday.

The 23-year-old, who will miss Euro 2024 due to a 10-month ban from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for breaching rules on betting on matches in Italy, was fined 20,000 pounds ($24,966.00) by the FA and warned about his future conduct.

Tonali was charged by the FA in March for allegedly breaking its rules 50 times by placing bets on matches between Aug. 12 and Oct. 12, 2023. The suspended two-month ban was handed down by an independent Regulatory Commission.

Newcastle said in a statement: “The banning period is fully suspended for the duration of the 2024-25 season, meaning he will be available to return to competitive football upon the conclusion of an existing ten-month sanction imposed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) on Oct. 27, 2023.

“Provided that he does not commit any further breach of the FA Betting Rules during the suspension period, Sandro will not serve any part of the two-month sanction.

“Sandro made full admissions as to his betting activity, and did so in circumstances where there was no other evidence to support misconduct proceedings.”

Newcastle signed Tonali in July last year for a reported fee of 70 million euros ($74.80 million) — making him the most expensive Italian player in history — but he has missed most of the season following his 10-month suspension.

Tonali was the highest profile player caught up in a betting scandal that shook Italian soccer last year. His agent had said he was suffering from a gambling addiction.

“As acknowledged by the FA in the independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons, the level of assistance Sandro has provided by self-referring and fully cooperating with a subsequent investigation is extraordinary and unprecedented,” Newcastle added.

“Sandro is continuing to follow a therapeutic plan and educational programme with the club’s full support and will continue to train with his team mates.”

Tonali was the second big-name player last year to receive a ban for betting on matches after England striker Ivan Toney.

The Brentford forward was banned for eight months and fined 50,000 pounds after admitting to 232 breaches of the FA’s betting rules. Toney, 28, returned to action in January.

Soccer-Man United have to improve squad but have a strong base, says Ten Hag

Soccer-Man United have to improve squad but have a strong base, says Ten Hag

(Reuters) – Manchester United have work to do in the transfer market in the close season if they are to get back to their best, manager Erik ten Hag said on Thursday.

United are sixth in the Premier League standings with 54 points, 13 fewer than fourth-placed Aston Villa and six below Tottenham Hotspur in fifth place. The Old Trafford side have four matches left in the league season.

Ten Hag flagged that United had suffered an alarming number of injuries, but they would still need new recruits after falling short of expectations.

“(There’s) always a lot of work, it’s normal when you go into a transfer window, but the injuries had a big impact,” Ten Hag told reporters ahead of Monday’s Premier League clash at 14th-placed Crystal Palace.

“We know also we are still below the levels from the expectations Man United has so we have to catch up and I’m now going into my fifth window — two windows quite okay, two we missed — so we have to make new improvements to the squad.

“But here is a base of this squad that is very good.”

Midfielder Bruno Fernandes is a doubt for the trip to Selhurst Park, while forward Marcus Rashford’s availability is still unclear.

Rashford picked up an injury in the FA Cup semi-final against Championship side Coventry City, which United won on penalties after surrendering a 3-0 lead at Wembley. The forward, 26, has since missed the games against Sheffield United and Burnley.

“Scott (McTominay) didn’t train so far this week but I expect him back in training on Saturday and we have to see if he’s 100% available or for a part of the game,” the Dutchman said.

“After the game (Burnley), we had an issue with Bruno. He is a doubt for Monday. We all know Bruno, never rule him out for any game. He will do his best to be available.

“Jonny (Evans) returned today for team training. Tomorrow we are off and then two days until the game. (Anthony) Martial was partly in team training.

“I can’t tell (about Rashford). His issue hasn’t healed so far.”

Ten Hag said he was happy to see Jadon Sancho, who is on loan from United at Borussia Dortmund, thrive. The 24-year-old winger produced a fine performance in Dortmund’s 1-0 win in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Paris St Germain on Wednesday.

The England international joined United from Dortmund for 85 million euros ($90.87 million) in August 2021, signing a five-year deal, but he failed to hold down a regular spot and returned to Germany after becoming embroiled in a row with Ten Hag.

“So let’s say this: yesterday he played very good and he’s a very good player. Yesterday he showed why Man United bought him and he showed he represents a high value for Man United, which is good,” Ten Hag said.

“I’m happy for Jadon, for the performance yesterday, and we’ll see what is going to happen in the future.”

Iqraam Rayners, Lehlohonolo Mojela and other shock Premier Soccer League Player of the Season candidates | Goal.com South Africa

As is often the case at this stage of the campaign, the debate about who will walk away with the coveted Player of the Season gong is raging.

Last season, Mamelodi Sundowns’ Teboho Mokoena beat Orlando Pirates star Monnapule Saleng and fellow Downs teammate Ronwen Williams to the accolade.

This sparked a major debate on social media and among fans with many adamant Bucs’ Saleng deserved the award ahead of the tough-as-nails midfield workhorse.

And this season also promises just as much drama and debate with there already being mixed opinions as to who deserves the big award at the end of the season.

Once again Mokoena’s name is in the mix, this time with a new Bucs star in Patrick Maswanganyi and a familiar foe for this particular accolade in teammate Williams.

However, there are no guarantees at this stage that either of the aforementioned players will clinch the award this year with some shock options emerging as candidates of late.

GOAL looks at some of these “underdogs”, for lack of a better word, in the race for the coveted Player of the Season award this season.
