Three soccer players arrested over alleged match-fixing involving yellow cards in Australian league

Three soccer players arrested over alleged match-fixing involving yellow cards in Australian league

SYDNEY (AP) — Three A-League players were arrested Friday for alleged betting corruption after police claimed they manipulated the number of yellow cards they received in games last year, Football Australia said.

New South Wales state police began an investigation in December 2023. Six months later, detectives have revealed that a “senior player” was alleged to have been taking instructions from a man — believed to be based in South America — to organize players taking yellow cards during matches for money.

Police have not publicly identified any of the players who have been charged, but investigators said all three are attached to a club based in southwest Sydney. They were scheduled to appear in court later Friday.

Police say yellow cards were manipulated during games played on Nov. 24 and Dec. 9 of last year. They also allege unsuccessful attempts were made during matches on April 20 and May 4.

Local media said police executed a search warrant at South Coogee, in Sydney’s east, on Friday, and arrested a 33-year-old man. Two men, aged 32 and 27, were arrested in Sydney’s western suburbs.

Media reports quoted police as saying the oldest of the trio is expected to be charged with two counts of engaging in conduct that corrupts a betting outcome of an event and two counts of facilitating conduct that corrupts a betting outcome.

The other two players are set to be charged with engaging in conduct that corrupts a betting outcome of an event.

Football Australia said it has been “made aware of the arrests of three A-League men players.”

“Football Australia is fully cooperating with the Organized Crime Squad, Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, Sport Integrity Australia and the New South Wales Crime Commission in this matter,” it added in the statement.”

NA’s Brand inks with SSU Soccer | People’s Defender

By Mark Carpenter

People’s Defender

Yet another student/athlete from North Adams High School has made her decision on where to continue her athletic and academic careers. Multi-sport standout Harlee Brand signed her letter of intent on May 8 to become a part of the women’s soccer program at Shawnee State University. The signing ceremony took place in the North Adams High School gymnasium.

Brand was a key member and integral part of the success of the Lady Devils soccer and basketball programs and will continue her college career on the SSU pitch. She leaves North Adams with her name in the soccer record books, due to her outstanding work between the pipes as the Lady Devils’ goalkeeper. She holds the school record for career shutouts (33) and single season shutouts (12).

Her college choice boiled down to a pair of schools, Shawnee State (NAIA) or D1 Delaware State, but ultimately Brand decided to stay in Ohio.

“I just felt like Shawnee would suit be best especially my first year because I eventually didn’t like the idea of being nine hours from my family,” she explained. “Shawnee’s soccer program is actually becoming much better over the years and I think I can improve it a lot by going there.”

With Brand in goal, the Lady Devils soccer team experienced much success and long tournament runs, but one moment sticks out as Harlee’s highlight.

“Definitely winning the first ever district title for girls soccer. It was the best season I’ve ever played in.”

The honor of coaching Harlee Brand in her high school career went to Morgan Hendrickson and she appreciates the talent that was under her guidance.

“Harlee is one of those gifts that a lot of coaches get maybe a few times in their career,” said North Adams girls soccer coach Morgan Hendrickson. ” Thankfully I have seen 2twogoalies come through North Adams with pure talent. I watched Harlee in elementary and middle school and knew even then, that she would be a great goalie. She has a God- given gift of defending the goal. Throughout the four years I’ve seen her grow tremendously. As a freshman, she came in from a COVID year with no high school experience, so there was a learning curve for her. She was shy and timid at first, but quickly took charge and realized her skills were far greater than most seniors, even at the age of 14.”

“The last couple of years she’s truly been amazing to watch. She was a large part of our success and she will be incredibly hard to replace. I’m so proud of her accomplishments on the field, but I’m prouder of the great young woman and role model she has become.”

While at Shawnee, Harlee plans to get a Bachelors in Science with the goal of becoming a Pediatric Anesthesiologist.

Shawnee State is an NAIA school and the Bears compete in the River States Conference, where Coach Chris Murphy’s women’s soccer squad finished last season at 8-10-1.

Soccer-Ten Hag sees the potential despite terrible season for Man United

Soccer-Ten Hag sees the potential despite terrible season for Man United

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – While it has been a season to forget for Manchester United, manager Erik ten Hag said he has maintained a positive outlook virtually throughout because he sees the potential of his squad and understands the reasons behind their struggles.

Manchester United’s potential was on display in Wednesday’s entertaining 3-2 Premier League win over Newcastle United as three of the team’s least experienced and youngest players — Kobbie Mainoo (19), Amad Diallo (21) and Rasmus Hojlund (21) — scored.

“I see the positives, I see that this team is developing, I know the reasons why we are not performing,” Ten Hag said. “No team will perform when the whole (injury-depleted) back four is not available, across the season.

“Even striker Rasmus Hojlund, three times injured, (Marcus) Rashford also injured, so we have had our problems across the season and that has a negative impact on the results.

“(But) you see players performing and you see players progressing like the youngsters and that is very positive, there is a high potential in this club. So, there are also many positives in this season, but I can’t mention this. You know why — at the end of the day, we have to win trophies. And in the Premier League, and in the Champions League, we didn’t perform what people expect from us.”

Ten Hag’s men remained eighth in the table with Wednesday’s win but level on 57 points with seventh-placed Newcastle in the fight for a European berth next season.

The victory at Old Trafford in their home finale felt like a reward for fans who have endured one of the worst home campaigns in the club’s history, and Ten Hag addressed the supporters he called the “best in the world” after the final whistle.

“We wanted to thank them for sticking with us, we are in difficult times,” he told Sky Sports. “We are in a transition at this club and the results are not what we expect. We also have our reasons, but it’s still a disappointing season.

“I am very pleased (with Wednesday’s win). In the past months we had many games where we were in winning positions but we couldn’t get over the line.”

If Ten Hag’s men win the May 25th FA Cup final versus holders Manchester City, they will play in the Europa League next season. However, if City win, United will need to finish seventh to secure a place in the Europa Conference League.

Manchester United, who have never finished lower than seventh in the Premier League, play at Brighton on Sunday and need to better Newcastle’s result at Brentford on the same day to move up to seventh place.

Soccer-PSG end Nice’s hopes of a Champions League spot

Soccer-PSG end Nice’s hopes of a Champions League spot

NICE, France (Reuters) – Paris St Germain beat 10-man Nice 2-1 away in Ligue 1 on Wednesday, leaving the hosts with no chance of a top-four finish.

PSG, who have already clinched the title and are preparing for the Coupe de France final on May 25, have 73 points, while Nice are fifth on 54 points. With one match remaining, they are four points behind fourth-placed Brest, ensuring they cannot qualify for the Champions League.

Bradley Barcola opened the scoring for Luis Enrique’s side in the 18th minute and Yoram Zague added a second five minutes later.

Nice managed to get on the scoreboard before the break through Mohamed-Ali Cho who was played in by Jeremie Boga.

However, their hopes of an equaliser were hit when Melvin Bard was sent off in the 75th minute for a foul on Barcola.

Soccer-Juventus win Coppa Italia final with early Vlahovic strike

Soccer-Juventus win Coppa Italia final with early Vlahovic strike

ROME (Reuters) -Juventus beat Atalanta 1-0 to win a record-extending 15th Coppa Italia on Wednesday as an early strike by Dusan Vlahovic earned Massimiliano Allegri’s side their first trophy in three years.

Juve, who hold both the record for most Italian Cup finals played (22) and won, had not lifted any silverware since they won the competition in 2020-21, when they also beat Atalanta in the final.

Allegri, meanwhile, became the first coach to win the Coppa Italia five times after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Roberto Mancini lifted the trophy on four occasions.

“Very happy for the boys, they brought joy to the club, to the fans and to me. Winning is never easy, but it is in our DNA,” Allegri told a press conference.

“If I am no longer the Juventus coach next year, I will leave a strong team. The club will make its evaluations.”

Vlahovic put Juventus in front in the fourth minute when he latched onto a pass from Andrea Cambiaso and broke inside the box to send the ball past goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi from around the penalty spot.

Vlahovic, who also found the net when they lost the final to Inter Milan in 2022 (4-2), became the third Juve player to score in two Coppa Italia finals after John Charles (1958-59, 1959-60) and Savino Bellini (1937-38, 1941-42).

“I find it difficult to speak, I can only thank everyone,” Vlahovic told Mediaset.

“We know the difficulties we faced, in the end we achieved the objectives set at the beginning of the year. I’m sorry for the Scudetto, but Inter deservedly won it.

“We are very happy, but next year we must aim to win everything. Juventus’ DNA requires this.”

The Serbia striker thought he doubled the lead in the 72nd minute, nodding home a lofted Cambiaso cross after the ball bounced in front of Carnesecchi and went into the net, but the goal was disallowed for an offside.

Juve quickly switched to defending their lead, creating chances on the counter attack, while preventing Atalanta from registering a single shot on target in the entire game.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s side had more possession throughout the match but an effort from outside the box by striker Ademola Lookman that hit the post in the 80th minute turned out to be their best chance.

Atalanta, who next Wednesday face Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final, have reached two different finals for the first time in a single season.

It was Atalanta’s fifth straight Coppa Italia final defeat after they won their sole title in 1962-63.

Soccer-Manchester United hold on to beat Newcastle 3-2 in home finale

Soccer-Manchester United hold on to beat Newcastle 3-2 in home finale

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) -Amad Diallo scored his first Premier League goal and assisted on another to power Manchester United to a 3-2 victory over Newcastle United on Wednesday at Old Trafford in a battle between teams fighting for a European berth next season.

Erik ten Hag’s team remained eighth in the table but level on 57 points with seventh-placed Newcastle. Chelsea are sixth on 60 points after beating Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 earlier on Wednesday to take a big step toward clinching a European berth.

“Obviously the job isn’t finished yet,” Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes told Sky Sports. “We still have one game in the Premier League then the biggest game of the season, the FA Cup final (on May 25 against holders Manchester City).

“It has been a tough season,” he added. “The table shows that and we are all aware of that. The fans have been amazing and behind us all season. We all appreciate what they have been doing for us. We want to do better and do differently and (the fans) deserve that.”

Kobbie Mainoo capitalised on Newcastle’s appalling defence to get the home side on the scoreboard in the 31st minute. Diallo spotted the 19-year-old unmarked near the penalty spot and Mainoo — kept onside by a half-asleep Kieran Trippier — turned and fired home.

Anthony Gordon drew Newcastle level in the 49th minute when he slid to stab in a cross from Jacob Murphy. But Diallo put Ten Hag’s team back on top eight minutes later when Fernandes’ corner was headed out, and Diallo, prowling alone just inside the 18-yard-box rifled in a shot which keeper Martin Dubravka had little chance of saving.

Rasmus Hojlund, who entered the game in the 82nd minute, scored two minutes later when he cut inside two defenders and slotted home from 16 yards, holding up a finger as if to silence the crowd.

Newcastle’s Lewis Hall pulled one back in injury time, but Ten Hag’s men held on to end one of the most miserable home seasons in years with a victory.

Ten Hag addressed the Old Trafford crowd after the game, thanking them for being the “best supporters in the world.”

“As you know it wasn’t an easy season, but one thing remained constant and that was the backing of you for the team,” Ten Hag, whose job has been the subject of speculation amid his team’s struggles this season, said to cheers from the red-clad crowd.

“This season is not over yet. First we go to Brighton where we travel for three points (on the final day of the season on Sunday) and then we go to Wembley. And I promise you those players will give everything to get that cup and bring it to Old Trafford.”

If Ten Hag’s men win the FA Cup, they will play in the Europa League next season. However, if they fail to win the Cup, they will need to finish seventh to secure a place in the Europa Conference League.

Manchester United, who have never finished lower than seventh in the Premier League, need to better Newcastle’s result at Brentford on Sunday to move up to seventh place.

Both teams had numerous scoring chances and Newcastle screamed for a penalty late in the first half after Gordon was taken down in the box in a tackle that left a gaping hole in the back of his sock. After a VAR review, no penalty was given.

“I don’t understand the point in VAR? (Sofyan) Amrabat fouled me and it’s a clear penalty,” Anthony told Sky. “Get rid (of VAR) or get better.”

Soccer-Chelsea maintain hope of final WSL title under Hayes with win at Spurs

Soccer-Chelsea maintain hope of final WSL title under Hayes with win at Spurs

LONDON (Reuters) -Chelsea took charge of the Women’s Super League title race with one game remaining after a 1-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday put the reigning champions top of the standings on goal difference.

Maika Hamano’s 37th-minute strike into the roof of the net from a brilliant Guro Reiten cross was enough to give manager Emma Hayes hope that she will end her glittering tenure at the club with one last piece of silverware.

Chelsea, who have won the last four WSL titles, will say goodbye to Hayes at the end of the season as the 47-year-old takes charge of the United States women’s team after 12 years in West London.

Robert Vilahamn’s Tottenham, nursing their wounds after losing the FA Cup final 4-0 to Manchester United on Sunday, tried to mount a comeback in the second half but lacked a clinical edge in the final third.

Chelsea moved top of the standings on 52 points, the same as second-placed Manchester City but with a superior goal difference of two ahead of Gareth Taylor’s side.

It all comes down to the final day on Saturday when Chelsea travel to Old Trafford to face United while City play at Aston Villa. On paper, Chelsea’s fixture looks more daunting, however, United and Villa both have little to play for but pride.

Hayes, who appeared to concede the title earlier this month before City slipped up at Arsenal last weekend, cut a relieved figure after the fulltime whistle at Brisbane Road.

“I think we have the tougher of the two games. We have to go to Old Trafford and it’s a fitting finale for me, being my final game,” Hayes told the BBC.

“As I said to the players if someone gives you a second chance in life, make sure you don’t need a third one. We’re in the position we want to be in, and we’ll give it everything on Saturday no matter what.”

After six league titles, five FA Cups and two League Cups Hayes suggested it was a good time to leave the club.

“I won’t swear but I’m absolutely knackered,” she said.

Soccer-Chelsea climb to sixth with 2-1 win over Brighton

Soccer-Chelsea climb to sixth with 2-1 win over Brighton

BRIGHTON, England (Reuters) -Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku struck either side of halftime to earn Chelsea a 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday, sending the London club into the final day of the Premier League season in sixth place.

Palmer turned in Marc Cucurella’s cross with a powerful header in the 34th minute to claim the 22nd league goal of his outstanding debut season and put the visitors in front at the Amex Stadium.

Nkunku side-footed home Malo Gusto’s cutback in the 64th minute to double Chelsea’s lead, but they then lost substitute Reece James to a straight red card for a petulant kick out at Joao Pedro in the 88th minute.

Danny Welbeck snatched a goal back for the hosts when he latched on to Pedro’s cross in the seventh minute of stoppage time, ensuring a frenetic end to the match, but Chelsea held on to win a fourth consecutive league game for the first time this season.

Cucurella, who was given a torrid reception by the home fans on his return to his former club, thought he had earned a penalty when he went down following a corner in the 15th minute, but the decision was overturned after a VAR check.

Victory sent Chelsea into their final match against Bournemouth on Sunday with hope still alive of qualifying for the Europa League, despite a horrendous start to their campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men began the season with one win in their first six league matches and three in their first 10, but are finishing strong, with just one defeat in their last 14 league outings.

Brighton, who are 10th, end the season at home to Manchester United.

Eisenhower girls soccer clinch third-straight MAC Red title with win over Dakota

Eisenhower girls soccer clinch third-straight MAC Red title with win over Dakota

For the third straight year, Eisenhower is the MAC Red Division girls soccer champion.

The Eagles clinched their third-consecutive league title by blanking visiting Dakota 3-0 on Wednesday night.

“Every year we work hard, play hard and it’s an honor to win the MAC Red,” Eisenhower coach Mehrdad Nekoogar said. “You never know with the district, as tough as it is, what is going to happen. All these teams (in the league) are good and to clinch it in only our eighth game is a huge accomplishment for us, especially with having three starters out for the season.”

Eisenhower scored the only goal it would need with 13:54 left in the opening half when Ellera Jakubowski scored off an assist by Maryn Smith. Ava Dukaj extended the lead to 2-0 five minutes later, scoring off a crossing pass from Jakubowski.

“Ava and Ellera have been scoring a lot of goals for us,” Nekoogar said. “I think they both have 18 or 19 goals. They do a very good job leading this team and putting them on their shoulders. There’s a lot of pressure on both of them, but they deliver.”

The Eagles added an insurance goal 13 minutes into the second half when Charlotte Long scored off an assist by Smith, her second helper of the game.

“Maryn is a freshman for us and has done a great job for us this year,” Nekoogar said. “She’s going to get better. Our team has been playing so well. I can’t complain.”

Dakota coach Gary Schodowski said his team entered the game with several injured starters out and it was hard for his squad to get on the same page.

“With key starters out, the communication out there has not been great,” Schodowski said. “It hurts. It’s not like we’ve been a very strong finishing team this season, but we have been solid defensively. We have three injured off the back line.

“Once the first goal happened, the girls start looking at each other different,” Schodowski added. “It’s a challenge for us.”

Eagle goalkeeper Molly Mellott made one save in the match, earning the shutout. The win improved Eisenhower’s record to 11-1-1 overall and 8-0-0 league. With districts set to begin in a week or so, Nekoogar said his team must play better if they want to contend for a state title.

“They tried to make quick decisions and play possession the way I like them to,” Nekoogar said. “Dakota is a good team and had some injuries tonight. I know if we play like we did tonight, we can’t rely on two or three players to score all our goals. We have to play better than this.”

Dakota goalkeeper Brooklyn Perron made three saves in the loss, which dropped the Cougars’ record to 6-4-5 overall, 4-2-3 league.

“We just need to have some time to heal,” Schodowski said. “We have a lot of little injuries right now that are plaguing us.”
